History:
The insulator is generally used in wire pole and made of glass or ceramics in the early years.In order to increase creep distance,it develops into discoid insulators hang in one end of high voltage wire connection tower along with the technology development.

Type:
The composite can be divided into line composite insulator, power station and electrical appliance composite insulator and rod suspension composite insulator,pin composite insulator,cross arm composite insulator,post composite insulator and windproof deflector composite insulator,etc..

Functions:
The insulator plays two roles in overhead power transmission line,that is support conductor and prevent the current from returning to earth.Both of them should be ensured.The insulator should not lose efficacy for various kinds of electrical and mechanical stress caused by environment and electrical load conditions,or the function would fail and harm the whole line and service life.

Advantages and Disadvantages:
Glass insulator
Advantage:high mechanical strength;difficult to crack in surface;low aging speed;Periodic live preventive test can be canceled in working process and "Zero "test is not needed in working process;low maintenance cost
Disadvantage: slight crack and other internal defect or damage can be easily find in outline inspection for the transparency of glass
Ceramic insulator
Advantage:Good chemical stability and heat stability,strong aging resistance,good electrical and mechanical performance;flexible assembly
Disadvantage:Only working for several years,the damage can be found.larger manpower and material resources cost as the "Zero"test must be conducted,which needs the piece by piece test by climbing the tower.accident happened easily for lightning stroke and pollution
Composite insulator
Advantages:Small size;convenient maintenance;light weight;easy installation;high mechanical strength;difficult to break;good anti-vibration performance;good pollution resistance;fast production cycle,reliable quantity.
Disadvantage:No better aging resistance than glass and ceramic insulators and higher producing cost than glass and ceramic insulators.
